Do Ebooks Need ISBNs?

When an ebook needs an ISBN, when a retailer may assign its own identifier, and why edition-level consistency still matters.

Short answer: An ebook does not universally require an ISBN to be sold on every platform, but many publishers use ISBNs for edition identification, distribution, metadata management, and trade workflows. Requirements depend on the sales and distribution channel.

Platform acceptance is not the whole question

A retailer may allow publication without a publisher-supplied ISBN while another distributor, library workflow, or metadata partner may benefit from or require one. Decide based on the entire distribution plan, not a single storefront.

Each format is a distinct product

Paperback, hardcover, audiobook, and ebook editions are different product forms. When ISBNs are assigned, the identifier should correspond to the specific edition rather than being shared casually across formats.

Keep identifier records centralized

Maintain a master record showing which ISBN or platform identifier belongs to each format. Use the same value consistently in the book file, distributor account, catalog records, and internal publishing files.

Check the target channel

Before assigning or omitting an ISBN, review the current requirements of the retailer or aggregator you intend to use. Platform rules can change.
